Understanding Dengue Testing: NS1, IgG & IgM – What They Mean & Why Timing Matters

Mumbai’s monsoon brings a rise in mosquito-borne diseases, especially Dengue. When fever strikes, doctors often recommend Dengue NS1, IgG, and IgM tests — but most people don’t know what these mean or why they matter.
We believe in early detection, clarity, and education at Panacea Care Diagnostics, Dadar. Here’s what you must know before getting tested.
1. What is the Dengue NS1 Antigen Test?
The NS1 (Non-Structural Protein 1) Antigen test detects the actual Dengue virus antigen in the blood — NOT antibodies.
When is it useful?
• Day 1 to Day 5 of fever (acute phase)
• Detects the infection before your body starts producing antibodies
Why it’s critical:
• Fast detection
• Indicates active infection
• Helps doctors begin early treatment and monitor platelet levels
Think of NS1 as the “early warning signal” — the virus is still multiplying.
2. What are Dengue IgM and IgG Antibody Tests?
When your immune system fights dengue, it produces antibodies — IgM and IgG — at different stages.
Dengue IgM
• Appears around Day 5–7 of infection
• Peaks in 2 weeks, declines after 1–3 months
• Indicates a recent or primary infection
Dengue IgG
• Appears after IgM, usually around Day 7 onward
• Remains in blood for months or years
• A positive IgG without IgM may indicate past infection or secondary dengue
What Do Different Results Mean?
NS1 IgM IgG Likely Interpretation
+ - - Early acute infection (Day 1–5)
- + - Recent infection (Day 5–10)
- + + Current infection; may be secondary dengue
- - + Past infection (or secondary exposure)
Why This Matters for You? "Timing is everything."
If you test too early or too late with the wrong test, it may give false negatives or confusing results.
At PCD Lab, our doctors ensure:
• Correct test based on symptom timeline
• No unnecessary retesting
